This is an original Mauser Model 1871 Cavalry Carbine in 11 .15 x60R Mauser , (.43 Mauser) produced by Dreyse in Sömmerda , Germany . This is the same Dreyse that produced the famous Dreyse needle rifle . The Dreyse Needle gun was revolutionary in the fact th at it was the first breechloading rifle to use bolt action to open and close the chamber . Dreyse manufactured only a very small quantity of M1871 Mauser long rifles , and even fewer carbines. From what I can find, the highest serial number recorded is in the 5XX range. I have been informed that t he S/N on this rifle indicate s this most likely would have been the first year of production . On the tang Chinese characters can be seen , which, based on markings and historical records, indicate that this rifle was sent to China and likely used by Chinese troops during the Boxer Rebellion (1899–1901) . After that, the rifle was brought to Australia , most likely by an Australian soldier present at the time or possibly by a Chinese immigrant seeking a new life.
