The Amber flints are sourced from coastal France and the Black ones come from the famed deposits in England. Opinions vary as to which is best .... it probably comes down to the individual firearm in truth. "Square" flints are made in some sizes to permit cocks to stand properly at half-cock without the flint pressing on the frizzen and preventing it from fully closing. These also give the flint a slightly longer/harder strike.
